A Message from Mission Services of London

“Rotholme Women’s & Family Shelter, a branch of Mission Services of London, has been experiencing some very significant occupancy challenges over the last 11 months, with Daily Average Occupancy routinely averaging 120%, and going all the way up to 200% at peak times. Through the generosity of community donors who responded to this need, and with the help of a one-time urgent grant from the City of London in 2018, Rotholme has been able to accommodate participants beyond its shelter capacity of 20 families, by using motels/hotels to cover overflow in the short term. It was our hope that the unprecedented increase in demand for family emergency shelter would be a short-term circumstance, subsiding to more usual levels over the course of the year; unfortunately, this has not been the case. Due to the infeasibility of continuing this approach as a long-term practice, effective January 1, 2019, Rotholme will no longer be able to use motels/hotels to cover overflow.

Families currently accessing hotel/motel stays through Rotholme, and who remain in need of emergency shelter as of January 1st, will continue to be supported as they move through the remaining steps toward more stable housing. However, we will be unable to accommodate new families into overflow.

Moving forward, we will continue to house up to 20 families within our existing shelter; we will also continue to seek proactive solutions to families experiencing a housing crisis and to divert families in a positive manner wherever possible.”

London’s 2018 Enumeration Report

On April 24, 2018, the City of London held its fourth annual community enumeration event, Counting Our Way Home.

During the enumeration event 73 community volunteers and 20 team leaders from homelessness serving agencies surveyed 406 individuals and families experiencing homelessness in 15 locations in London.

LHC Elections Process

The Homeless Coalition Steering Committee consists of 8 members plus a Chair. Elections for Steering members and the Chair occur separately. Steering positions include: Vice-Chair, Secretary, Communications, Outreach, and 4 members-at-large. The Steering Committee meets on the 3rd Monday of each month from 9-10:30am. Terms last for 2 years.

4.1 Date of Elections

4.1.1. The election of the Chair and Steering Committee members shall occur at the November General Membership meeting.

4.2 Nomination of Candidates

4.2.1. A call for nominations will take place at the October General Membership Meeting. Candidates shall indicate their intention to run for a position by notifying the Chair in the window between the October General Membership Meeting and the Sunday before the October Steering Committee Meeting on the third Monday of the month.    This notification should briefly include the candidate’s interest in holding the position, and their reasons for wishing to participate.  Nominations will be closed on that Sunday.

4.2.2. Using an updated Membership list prepared in advance by the Secretary, the Steering Committee shall finalize the ballot at its October meeting.

4.2.2. The Chair shall circulate the information provided to him/her by the candidates regarding their interest in holding the position and their reasons for wishing to participate in the agenda for the November General Membership Meeting.  

4.3 Election of Candidates

4.3.1. Candidates will be given an opportunity to briefly address the Membership at the Election Meeting.  Candidates who are unable to attend the meeting may submit their remarks in writing to be communicated to the Members.

4.3.2. There shall be two ballots – one for the Chair and one for the Members of the Steering Committee.

4.3.3. If the number of candidates for the Steering Committee is equal to the number of open spots on the Steering Committee, the slate of candidates will be acclaimed.  If the number of candidates for the Steering Committee exceeds the number of open spots, an election shall be held.  Up to nine persons shall be elected, including the Chair.

4.3.4. Only members present at the November General Membership meeting shall have the ability to vote.  There shall be no proxies. The Secretary will take appropriate measures to ensure that only the votes of Voting Members’ are counted.

4.3.5. The Steering Committee will delegate the task of Scrutineer to a Resource Member.  If required, a second Resource Member will be selected to assist the Scrutineer.

4.3.6. The candidate who receives the most votes shall be considered elected.

4.3.7. In the case of a tie, there will be a second ballot.

4.3.8. At the end of the election, ballots will be destroyed.

Child Abuse Call to Action Symposium

Good afternoon everyone,

On behalf of the Child Abuse Prevention Council of London & Middlesex, you are warmly invited to participate in the upcoming Call to Action Symposium that will be held on Thursday, October 4th from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm at the Children’s Aid Society.  A continental breakfast will be available beginning at 8 am.

The invitation is attached along with the Child Abuse & Neglect Community Framework that was developed by the Child Abuse Prevention Council.

The symposium goals are to:

  1. Enhance awareness of prevention factors for child abuse & neglect and how all sectors play a role
  2. Develop a Community Action Plan
  3. Share practical organizational resources to support your work
